Incorrect Curvature – How Can ChiroCure Clinic help?

WHAT CAUSES INCORRECT SPINAL CURVES?
  • Post whiplash
  • Post head injury
  • Stomach sleeping
  • Poor sitting/working postures
  • Congenital spinal curvatures
  • Osteoporosis
  • Degenerative cervical discs (a form of osteoarthritis that can either be the cause of or the result of a cervical kyphosis)
  • Compression fracture of vertebral body
  • Infection of the cervical spine
Loss or Reversal of Neck Curvature – ChiroCure Clinic explains

A healthy neck has a normal lordotic curvature (seen in picture 1) and an
abnormal curvature in the spine (seen in picture 2) is most commonly known as a ‘straight’ or forward curvature. This is abnormal and may cause the progression of many symptoms, untimely leading to premature cervical/lumbar disk degeneration. The pathology leading to a neck curve reversal may be inspired by a multitude of conditions.

HOW DO WE GET GOOD POSTURE?
Our recommended treatment plan includes:
Spinal manipulation of stiff and fixated spinal segments by a qualified physician
Flexibility exercises for flexion and extension of cervical and lumbar spine
Resistance exercises for flexors and extensors in the neck and legs
Eliminate stomach sleeping
Avoid standing on your head, although some yoga postures may be beneficial
Use of water therapy pillow while sleeping (water pillows sold at ChiroCure Clinic)

TREATMENT FOR INCORRECT CURVATURE AT CHIROCURE CLINIC EXPLAINED.
Establish and ergonomic friendly work environment while working on a computer / desk. The computer monitor should be at eyebrow level, an ergonomic chair should remain in a slightly forward tilted position to facilitate an upright posture. If you do not have such a chair, try a back support cushion with a built in forward tilt. Use of an ergonomic footrest to balance the forward tilt of an ergonomic chair. Elbows must be at your side during mousing, track pad or keyboard entry. DO NOT reach for these items.
For more info please ask Dr Tania Leski or phone the clinic on (03) 9013 5133.

WHY SHOULD WE HAVE THE CORRECT POSTURE?
Maintaining good posture throughout our lives is crucial to both the health of our spine and vital organs. When ChiroCure looks at a person from the back their spine should be truly straight, so that the left and right sides of the body are symmetrical. However, when we view a person from the side, the front and back of their body is different and this is reflected in a coinciding curvature of the spine.

Spinal disks are shock absorbers and because they are in the front of the spine, lordotic curvatures keep them from having to bear weight. Kyphosis or loss of such curvatures bears weight upon the disks, leading to their ultimate degeneration. This process of deterioration is a form of osteoarthritis and in the spine is known as degenerative spondylosis.

DIAGNOSIS
At ChiroCure your chiropractor will recognise a cervical curve reversal upon viewing your posture,  taking a comprehensive history, a thorough examination, questions about sleep, work and lifestyle. A definitive diagnosis may be obtained via a standing lateral X-ray of the spine.

ChiroCure Clinic uses X-Rays to assess your spinal degeneration

Picture

Example of an X-ray analysis for a patient suffering low back pain

Degenerative joint disease, “DJD”, is basically wear and tear on the spinal bones and soft tissues, like the spinal disc. Degenerative joint disease can also be called osteoarthritis, or arthritis of the spine. Many people are not aware that they have degenerative joint disease of the spine as it can sit silently decaying the spine over many years.

WHAT IS ARTHRITIS? DR TANIA LESKI EXPLAINS…
While arthritis of the spine may not always produce pain, often patients will notice decreased mobility of the spine and “grating noises” in the spine called crepitus due to the changes in the spine as a result of osteoarthritis. Degenerative joint disease is not merely from the process of aging. Trauma and subluxation play keys roles in the formation of osteoarthritis.

Chirocure treatments can help with incorrect curvature and associated spinal conditions including kyphosis and scoliosis

INCORRECT CURVATURE

Changes in posture can cause signs such as a hump in the upper back and hip tilt in the lower back.

Kyphosis is rounding of the upper back that may cause a visible hump, loss of height, and change in postural dynamics.

There are many types of kyphosis, including Scheuermann’s kyphosis and kyphosis associated with aging.

DIAGNOSING SPINAL CONDITIONS

X-rays can be taken to assess and determine spinal alignment and spinal conditions including kyphosis and scoliosis.

Xray images can be taken at any radiology practice in Melbourne with a referral.

Our chiropractors can provide you with a referral to have spinal X-ray images..

Referrals can be bulk billed through medicare.

Diagnostic Imaging may help to diagnose certain spinal conditions including fractures, disc degeneration, facet injury, and Scheuermann’s kyphosis.

An MRI is rarely necessary for evaluating kyphosis, this is best determined upon results and GP recommendations.

REHAB AND SUPPORT FROM OUR REMEDIAL THERAPISTS  AT CHIROCURE

Stretching and strengthening exercises may be beneficial in decreasing pain associated with kyphosis, scoliosis and vertebral alignment changes.

Our remedial therapists can show you how to do exercises and stretches to release tight muscles.

Practitioners can also offer support with ergonomic advice, posture support and advice, recommend natural supplements, joint strapping or bracing, and co management with additional physical therapies.
